Possum Control in Canberra
We recently received an emergency call to come out to a property in Deakin, very late at around 9pm. The customer had arrived home horrified to find a possum sitting on his bed. This is extremely unusual, but obviously can happen from time to time. How can you control possums?
Amalgamated Pest Control to the rescue!
Our technician went straight out to the customer’s home, caught the possum and removed it from inside the customer’s house.
Normally possums make their homes in tree hollows but if there aren’t any they will use any suitable dark place. The space between the ceiling and roof of a house is also a great spot. It’s dark and safe from predators.
This is when possums can create havoc and many sleepless nights in your home. If you’ve ever had a possum problem, you’d agree. They are much more than just a nuisance pest, they urinate and defecate in these cavities and this can cause damage to ceilings and property.
The possum in the photo has the right idea. Why sleep in a roof cavity when you can sleep on a comfortable bed.
What can be done to control possums?
It can be difficult to remove a possum. It’s important to understand their habits.
Things to do:
- Make your area less appealing to the possums!
- Overgrown trees and shrubs around your home, trim them as soon as possible.
- Invest in a good quality rodent proof gutter guard. Even though possums are not rodents, good quality gutter guard will keep them out.
- Have a roofer inspect your roof. There may be broken tiles and the like that allows them entry.
- If you have compost, you should ensure that it’s kept in an appropriate sealed compost bin.
- Do your best to close off entry points under the home or under staircases or decks.
- Prepare some alternative accommodation for them – see below…
How Amalgamated Pest Control can help with possum control
Possums are great animals and they are native to Australia so they cannot be harmed in any way or physically removed from the area where they’ve decided to call home.
Possums relocated from where they’re caught, rarely survive.
Amalgamated Pest Control can help you by trapping and removing the possum, however by law it needs to be released only a few meters from capture. This means that you have to be ready to keep them out – or provide them with a new home nearby.
One solution that is becoming very popular is to have a possum den installed in a tree on your property. In areas of high possum populations a good idea is to install a purpose made den to a tree or pole.
Placing fruit inside will attract the recently ‘homeless’ possum inside. it will realise that it is a nice place and will become its new den.
Many customers of Amalgamated Pest Control have had these installed to their properties which work very well.
The picture shows a den attached to structure of this customers house who loved ‘his’ possum but not in the roof making noise and urinating.
Are you concerned about possums or other pests?
If you suspect you might have a possum problem, don’t try to remove it on your own. It’s illegal.
